Mistakes Your Painter or Decorator Should Never Make

We understand — your driveway is starting to look a little weary, the concrete’s stained, and a fresh coat of paint might just smarten the place up. A nice paint job will really lift the look of your entire property and help protect your concrete from the harsh weather we get here in Christchurch.

Painting your driveway isn’t, however, as simple as slapping a coat of paint on your driveway and calling it a day. There have been a lot of bad DIY jobs that we’ve encountered in our time. Sometimes it’s the boxing, other times it’s dodgy prep, and often enough it’s just bad timing with the weather (we all know how ruthless Canterbury can be).

So before you get started, or before you bring someone else in, here are the rest of the biggest driveway painting don’ts in Christchurch… and how to get it right.

1. Not Preparing the Surface Properly

That’s, by far, the most common error we see. Paint won’t adhere to a driveway that is dusty, greasy or covered in moss. And in Christchurch, where our winters are very wet and the lime loves a bit of moss, this is something we see a lot.

We assisted a homeowner in St Albans who decided to paint a mossy driveway – it looked great for a week and then peeled off in chunks. The prep wasn’t done properly.

What to do instead:

  • Power wash everything with a water blaster
  • Treat any moss or mould as you would when cleaning the inside — don’t just hose it down
  • Remove oil stains (if your car is a little leaky)
  • If you’re patching cracks or using repair material, lightly mist it to prevent it from drying too quickly and cracking.
  • Wait for it to dry thoroughly before you paint it

Yes, it’s time-consuming — but if you don’t, the paint won’t last. Simple as that.

2. Using the Wrong Paint

Many people believe any old exterior paint will suffice. We’ve even seen people using leftover interior paint from a hallway. The problem? It doesn’t last. The sun, the tyres, the rain, and the day-to-day foot traffic will wear it down in no time.

You need something tough. Something made for driveways.

What we recommend:

Choose the right type of concrete driveway paint — ideally, a tough coating designed to withstand cars rolling over it, UV light, and the temperature and weather variations we enjoy here in Canterbury. If you prefer a nice, even finish, spray application works well too, especially with textured coatings that provide extra grip on those chilly, slippery mornings.

We had a job in Halswell where the client chose a textured charcoal finish — it didn’t just look modern, it also added safety by making the driveway less slippery when wet.

3. Painting in the Wrong Weather

The weather here is a bit of an unknown factor. One minute the sun’s shining, the next minute there’s a southerly coming through.

Paint hates extremes. Too hot, and it dries too quickly. And if too much humidity or cold causes it not to dry properly, it can go sticky or worse.

Best practice:

  • Avoid painting in direct sun
  • Pick a dry, temperate day — specifically in Spring or Autumn
  • Just make sure that there isn’t any rain in the forecast for at least 48 hours
  • If the concrete’s wet, don’t apply paint

We always make sure to check the forecast before diving headfirst into any exterior painting in Christchurch — we’re firm believers that a little bit of planning goes a long way.

4. Skipping the Sealer

Exterior paintwork is like one of those things where you’ve done all the hard work — scrubbed the surface, painted it brilliantly — and then you forget to put the topcoat on. Big mistake.

A sealer does two key things:

  1. It helps keep your paint finish looking like new.
  2. Aids in maintaining a good appearance for longer.

We never offer driveway painting services without sealing afterwards. It’s essential if you want the finish to last a long time. One of our customers in Spreydon hasn’t needed a repaint in the last 6 years since we re-sealed their roof.

5. Driving on It Too Soon

This happens more often than you think. The paint appears dry to the touch, but it’s still curing underneath. Then someone backs the car, and the tyres strip half the paint away.

Golden rule:

  • Do not walk on it for 24–48 hours.
  • Do not drive or park vehicles on it for 5–7 days.
  • Full cure is a month — so take it easy for the first few weeks.

As we always tell our clients: better to wait a few extra days than to have to redo the job from scratch.

Frequently asked questions in and around Christchurch

Is it a good idea to paint a driveway?

Yes — if you do it right. It enhances the appearance of your home, makes your concrete last longer and can even increase your home’s resale value. We’ve had customers out in Fendalton and Rolleston who claim transforming their driveways gave their homes a new lease on life, making them look 10 years younger.

How long does a painted driveway last?

Typically, five to 10 years, depending on how well it was prepped and the paint that was used, as well as the traffic it receives. Put the proper sealer on, and you will easily get more from it.

What should a driveway paint job cost?

For a professional finish in Christchurch, it will be approximately $25–$45 per m².

That covers cleaning, crack repairs, painting and sealing. DIY might cost less in materials, but it flops fairly quickly, and you could be left paying more to redo it.

How much does it cost to paint a driveway per m²?

If you’re comparing quotes:

  • Simple DIY supplies: $10–$20 per m²
  • Professional service: $25–$45 per m²
  • Decorative and textured finishes: $40–$60 + per m²

Thinking About Colour?

Just one colour can jazz things up. Lighter colours can lighten the room, while darker colours mask tyre marks and dirt.

Popular choices in Christchurch include:

  • Charcoal – contemporary, clean, stain hiding
  • Modern Taupe or Sandstone – perfect for warmer homes
  • Earth browns – suitable for natural gardens or with timber cladding
  • Terracotta – if you want something rich and Mediterranean-style

We’re always delighted to provide samples and help you find a colour that is right for your home.
